What’s included

• No payment to book online, so it’s free to cancel a reservation. Payments at the kiosk follow our refund policy.
• Renters must be 18 or older and show a government-issued photo ID, which we hold as a deposit and hand back when the gear comes back.
• Please sign the waiver before pickup. It takes about 2 minutes.
• You get a 15-minute grace period when you return the gear.

Hours

Memorial Day – Labor Day: open daily, weekdays 10–5, weekends 9–6 PT.

The rest of the year: open on some weekends, weather and demand permitting.

How to Surf for Beginners

1. Strap the leash to your back ankle and start in waist-deep whitewater (waves that have already broken), not the bigger unbroken ones.
2. Lie on the board so the nose sits just above the water. Too far back and it stalls, too far forward and it dives.
3. When the whitewater is close, point the board straight at the beach and paddle with long strokes.
4. When you feel the wave push you, put your hands flat under your chest, push up and bring your feet under you in one move, landing sideways with feet shoulder-width apart.
5. Stay low with knees bent and look toward the beach, not at your feet.
6. When you fall, fall flat and away from the board, and cover your head with your arms as you come up.

Wetsuit tip: the ocean here is cool most of the year, so most beginners stay out longer and more comfortably in a wetsuit. The zipper goes in the back. See wetsuit rentals for sizes and how to put one on.

Safety at Oceanside

• Swim and ride near an open lifeguard tower, and ask the lifeguard about conditions before you go out.
• Rip currents are narrow channels of water flowing away from shore. If one pulls you out, don’t fight it: swim parallel to the beach until you’re out of it, then head in, or float and wave for a lifeguard. Wear the leash so your board stays with you; it also helps you float.
• Stay well clear of the pier pilings. Currents can pull you toward them and they’re crusted with sharp mussels.

Multi-day rentals

Multi-day rentals are available by request for 2 or more items, with a 3-day minimum. Check “Multi-day request” on the reservation form and list your gear. We’ll meet you at the kiosk with it, even on days we’re closed, and again when you return it.

How much does it cost to rent a surfboard in Oceanside?

Surfboards are $19 for 2 hours, $27 for 4 hours or $34 all day.

How much is a wetsuit?

A wetsuit is $14 with any board rental, any length. On its own it’s $16 for 2 hours, $21 for 4 hours or $29 all day. Adult wetsuits match your T-shirt size (XS to XXL) and kids’ wetsuits match their clothing size (4 to 14).
